A recent study done by The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that coffee is not associated with any increased risk of cancer, leading the World Health Organization to reverse its previous warning.
What’s the catch?
Drinking hot beverages, though, is “probably carcinogenic to humans. Hot drinks cause scald burns in the esophagus, which another new study in the International Journal of Cancer linked to as much as a 5% addition in risk for esophageal cancer.
Hot is anything over 149 Fahrenheit. Most hot drinks are heated to over 200 Fahrenheit, especially teas which require boiling (212 degrees Fahrenheit).
The new classification puts consuming very hot drinks in the same risk group as exposure to substances such as lead, gasoline, and exhaust fumes.
For those who would like to be cautious going forward but don’t want to carry a thermometer around with them — either switch to iced drinks OR 2 teaspoons of milk in coffee or tea will cool your cup down to a safe temperature in about 5 minutes (according to a study done by the Journal of the International Society for Burn Injuries) .
