SILICON VALLEY - When Munjal had his first massive chest pain, he was running. In 2010, days after selling his company to Google, Munjal Shah signed up for a 10k race. He went through his normal warm-up, put on his shoes, and took to the starting line. He imagined himself crossing the finish line; instead, in the middle of the race, he was whisked away to the ER with chest pains. He was only 37.

For Munjal, this was the wake up call he needed. And over the next three years, he changed his diet, ran 3 marathons, and lost 40 pounds.

Through this experience, he realized how hard it was to stay healthy. He realized how much work the health conscious put in everyday, hours upon hours doing meal prep and working out and taking care of their bodies - on top of their day-to-day responsibilities. He thought this effort should be celebrated.

That’s when, in 2013, Health IQ was born.

Health IQ is an innovative insurance startup. Its aim is to disrupt the 120 billion life insurance industry by rewarding the health conscious financially, giving them special rates on life insurance. “It seemed like a simple, powerful idea, yet one that hadn’t been done before,” says Munjal. Since then, a colorful cast of characters joined this mission. Like Munjal, each one of them was touched by a health related challenge in their own lives or lives of their family members. Like Munjal, each one of them was driven to become healthier.

“When I turned 40, after 4 years leading business development for a startup that became a billion dollar company, I found out my cholesterol & blood sugar were dangerously high.” said Gaurav, Health IQ’s Co-Founder & COO. “I had not lost the weight my doctor had harassed me about for years, so he prescribed statins.” Since then, Gaurav has lost over 40 lbs.

“I had a serious weight problem, and I found myself weighing over 300 pounds,” said Brett Cooper, a Health IQ Co-Founder. “After suffering a weight-related injury, I decided to return to a healthy lifestyle and two years later I had safely lost 120 pounds.”

And more and more health conscious people joined his mission. “I developed poor health habits after years of stressful student and work life,” says Chander Sudanthi, a Health IQ Co-Founder. “Over the years, I balanced my lifestyle, improving my diet and becoming more active. I am now happier, healthier, and 40 pounds lighter.”

Since starting Health IQ in 2013, over 70 health conscious people have joined Munjal’s mission. By focusing on their diet, working out regularly, and increasing their health literacy, they’ve lost a combined 800 lbs.
