I compete against my job for the more Humana Vitality points I get the more money I get from them. With that I need to stay active. A win/win for me.

I just beat every one of you by acing this lame vague quiz. I feel great! Still out of shape though, but definitely feeling motivation and dopamine surges of joy.

The key to getting started is to select the right measures, establish your baselines, and then commit to activity that will help improve those measurements. Sometimes you have to be willing to go backward before breaking through a plateau, especially when your technique needs refinement!

Sign up for a race and try to beat my last time. Anywhere from a 5k to a half marathon.

I'm doing the insanity workout right now and keeping track of my numbers. Since I'm not in great shape, my challenge is to better each of those numbers.

Age affects if, when and how we compete. At 50, I would use the previous year's times in my triathlons as baselines for the current year. Twenty-five years later I compete only in swimming, and frankly I care more about "being there" than about winning. True--I train to perform at my best but often now my times are worse than earlier years. Aging does that sometimes.

Challenges are a fun way to keep focused on the goal of constant improvement.
