If your plants are loving your environment chances are your yogurt will too. It is much harsher here so nurturing is required. Keep the area sterile to keep out volunteer bacteria.

You can do it in a crock pot. However, in order to make thick, Greek style yogurt, you must strain it in cheesecloth in order to remove excess water. http://www.makeyourownyogurt.com

In India yogurt is made at home every night. Boil milk and let it cool a little until it is warm but not hot. Add quarter spoon of leftover yogurt from previous day. Cover in some warm clothes and put in a warm place. Do all this at night. In the morning yogurt will be ready and put it in the fridge to consume later.

Thank you both! Very good tips. I've heard of people just putting the jars on the counter with no controlled heat. This could be subject to climate. I live in CA - maybe if it's warm enough, this is possible?

I have made regular yogurt in an insulated cooler by filling one of the mason jars with boiling water and sealing the cooler for the recommended time. You want a warm, moist, nurturing environment for the bacteria. Similar to nurturing yeast for bread.
