The suggestion of a clonic movements and chesty water for strengthening knees and other parts of the leg is an excellent suggestion.

Agreed with Rochelle on the biking - cycling fixed the knee problems I used to have in my 20's. Just remember to keep the gearing low so you spin fast and don't push too hard. Also - don't underestimate walking or hiking! While strength training is great, many studies have shown that people who walk a lot have overall better joint health in the long run. (Same is true of runners - IF - there are no pre existing conditions and they take care not to get injured.)

Anne is completely right, but cycling is also extremely beneficial to improve your knee join health as it builds leg muscle and works on cardio yet is low impact (unlike running). Cycling was a major part of my rehab after I tore my patellar tendon and really helped to get me back to competing (track 200m/400m, high jump, and basketball).

Wear a brace while exercising, careful lunges are great for strengthening the legs.

Just like with the rest of the body, strength in many areas of the body takes pressure off just one muscle. Muscles work in pairs — one contracts while the opposing one relaxes. Strong quadriceps and hamstrings (and glutes) can take over the shock-absorbing role usually played by the meniscus or cartilage in the knee. Do any exercises that strengthens those muscles and add flexibility into your weekly regimen (like stretching after a workout, yoga once a week)

The best are compound exercises: squats, dead lifts (that's more for the back), lunges. Proper technique and a strong core is the key to not injuring joints.
