I find that strength training or Cardio are not solutions for weight loss. The effort you put in is generally converted to hunger. Hunger leads to increased eating. Effective weight loss is achieved by proper eating and enough sleep. Eliminate grains and sugars, add in 8 hours of sleep and you eliminate weight . Cardio will keep you toned and heart healthy. It will not help you lose weight.

Barre classes and other dance classes can be good calories burners while being gentle on your joins.

Exercise alone will not result in weight loss; you need to burn more calories than you consume. I would suggest you get evaluated by an exercise physiologist or a trainer who can assess your physical deficits and work out a program that can build up large muscle groups that can take the load off your knees and other joints. Starting up with swimming or an elliptical to build your endurance will provide a good start.
In order to lose weight, it helps to track your food and exercise. One of the best tools I have seen for this is a website and smart phone application called MyFitnessPal.
