I do meal prep on the weekends, usually Sunday, so there is no guess work in what I eat during the week. I also track my macronutrient intake because of how much I train and sometimes it's hard making sure I get the proper amount of fuel to recover. Under eating is just as bad as over eating in terms of metabolic function.

Small plates, trying just a bite or two of everything and then choosing a favorite to eat more of after you've tried all the options, filling up on leafy greens or other low cal veggies before eating other things so you aren't ravenous and will therefore eat less of those things

Eat the kinds of foods where portion size doesn't even need to factor into the equation. In other words, why would I want to only eat half or some smaller amount of a food that I believe isn't good for me? Most of the foods we try to portion control are the kinds of foods that cause cravings anyway, which makes for a good effort but is sustainable only in rare cases. Can anyone really eat just 1,2, or 3 high-sodium, high-oil/fat starch or one handful of a high-fat salted seed or nut? It's not impossible just difficult for most people. Avoidance of foods you believe to be harmful is probably the easiest tactic to maintain over a long period of time.
